Uses Plaid API · Your Data, Your Control

Your AI-Powered Financial Assistant

Nolan helps you securely connect your bank and investment accounts, understand your spending, and receive personalized financial insights — all with your privacy at the center.

What Nolan Does

Nolan is a personal finance app that brings together your financial accounts in one place and uses AI to surface the insights that matter most to you.

Account Connection

Securely link checking, savings, and investment accounts through Plaid's encrypted connection flow.

Spending Analysis

Automatically categorize transactions and visualize where your money goes each month.

Financial Insights

Receive AI-generated observations about your balances, trends, and opportunities to save.

Privacy First

Nolan never stores your bank login credentials. Your data is used solely to power the app's features.

How Nolan Uses Plaid

Nolan uses the Plaid API to facilitate secure bank account connections. Plaid is an independent third-party service; Nolan is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or officially partnered with Plaid Technologies, Inc.

  1. 1

    User Initiates Connection

The user taps "Connect Account" within Nolan. No financial data is accessed until the user explicitly consents.

  2. 2

    Plaid Link Opens

Nolan launches Plaid Link, a secure, Plaid-hosted UI. Nolan never sees, handles, or stores the user's bank username or password at any point.

  3. 3

    Authentication at the Bank

The user authenticates directly with their financial institution inside Plaid Link. Multi-factor authentication (MFA), if required by the bank, is handled entirely within Plaid Link.

  4. 4

    Plaid Returns a Token

Upon successful authentication, Plaid returns a short-lived public_token to Nolan's mobile client. This token has no value on its own and cannot be used to access account data directly.

  5. 5

    Secure Server-Side Exchange

Nolan's mobile app sends the public_token to Nolan's backend API over HTTPS/TLS. The backend exchanges it for an access_token using the Plaid API. The access_token is stored securely server-side and is never exposed to the client or user.

  6. 6

    Data Retrieval and Analysis

Nolan's backend retrieves transaction, balance, and account data from Plaid on the user's behalf. This data is then processed to generate spending summaries and financial insights displayed within the app.

Data Security

Nolan is built with security as a foundational requirement, not an afterthought. Below are the specific measures in place to protect user data.

Privacy Policy

Effective date: July 7, 2026  ·  Owner: Husein Mokbel

1. Information We Collect

When you connect a bank or investment account, Nolan — via Plaid — retrieves account and transaction data (account names, balances, transaction descriptions, amounts, and dates) that you have authorized us to access. We do not collect your bank login credentials at any time.

Nolan does not require an account, login, or email address. During onboarding you may enter profile details (first name, age, province or state, income, expenses, savings, debt, and goals); this information is stored locally on your device and used to personalize the app. Our backend keeps standard, short-lived technical logs for debugging and abuse prevention. We also count anonymous product events (such as "app opened" or "message sent"), keyed by a random install identifier, to understand overall usage; these counts never include your name, your finances, or anything you type.

2. How We Use Your Information

Your financial data is used exclusively to provide Nolan's core functionality: categorizing transactions, calculating balances, and generating personalized financial insights within the app. We do not sell your data, share it with advertisers, or use it for any purpose unrelated to delivering the service.

3. Plaid's Role

Nolan uses Plaid Technologies, Inc. to facilitate bank account connections. By connecting an account, you also agree to Plaid's End User Privacy Policy. Plaid's privacy practices are independent of Nolan's.

4. AI Processing (Anthropic) and Your Consent

Nolan's assistant is powered by AI from Anthropic, PBC, a company based in the United States. Before any of your personal data is sent to Anthropic, Nolan asks for your explicit permission on a consent screen inside the app during setup. Nothing is shared with Anthropic until you agree, and you can withdraw this permission at any time in the app's Settings, which stops all sharing. When you chat with Nolan, your message, any image or file you attach (for example a photo of a receipt or a PDF bank statement), recent conversation history, and a summary of your financial data (such as account balances, spending totals, and transaction descriptions and categories) are transmitted over an encrypted connection to our backend and then to Anthropic to generate the response. Your bank login credentials are never part of this data. Under Anthropic's commercial terms, this data is not used to train AI models, and Anthropic provides protection for your data equivalent to what this policy describes. For questions about current topics such as rates or market news, the AI provider may perform a web search to ground the answer; your account numbers and balances are not included in search queries. AI-generated responses are informational and may contain mistakes; always verify important figures against your bank. See Anthropic's privacy policy at anthropic.com/legal/privacy.

5. Where Your Data Lives

Your profile and chat history are stored locally on your device and are removed when you delete your data or the app. To personalize the in-chat insight shortcuts, Nolan also keeps a small on-device record of the topics you ask about; it never leaves your device and is erased with your data. If you enable iCloud backup in Settings (on by default), a small copy of your profile, the assistant's memory notes, and your bank connection reference is stored in your own private iCloud, controlled by your Apple ID; Nolan's servers never receive it, and turning the toggle off or deleting your data erases it. Plaid access tokens are stored on Nolan's secured backend server and are revoked when you disconnect a bank or delete your data. Subscription payments are processed entirely by Apple; Nolan never sees or stores your payment card details.

Our service providers (Plaid, Anthropic, and our hosting provider) process data on servers located in the United States. By using Nolan you consent to your information being transferred to and processed in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those in your country of residence.

6. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal or financial information to third parties. Data may be shared only with the service providers necessary to operate Nolan: Plaid (bank connectivity), Anthropic, PBC (AI responses, only after you grant permission as described in section 4), Apple (subscriptions and payments), and our cloud hosting provider. Each receives only what it needs, only to the extent required to provide the service, and each is bound by its own terms and privacy policy that provide protection for your data equivalent to what this policy describes.

7. Cookies and Tracking

The Nolan website (this page) does not use cookies, tracking pixels, or any third-party analytics scripts. No personal data is collected through this website.

8. Security Measures

We implement industry-standard security measures including HTTPS/TLS encryption in transit and secure, access-controlled storage for sensitive data. Plaid API secrets are stored server-side only and are never exposed to client applications or end users.

9. Children's Privacy

Nolan is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.

10. Your Rights

Depending on where you live (including under Canada's PIPEDA, the EU GDPR, and the California CCPA/CPRA), you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to withdraw consent. You can exercise the most important of these directly in the app: Settings → "Delete all my data" permanently revokes Nolan's bank access at Plaid and erases your profile, chat history, and stored data. For any other request, contact mokbel.huss@gmail.com and we will respond within 30 days.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via the app or by updating the effective date above. Continued use of Nolan after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

Data Retention and Disposal Policy

Effective Date: March 15, 2026  ·  Organization: Husein Mokbel (Founder / Developer)

1. Purpose

This Data Retention and Disposal Policy defines how consumer data is collected, stored, retained, and securely deleted in compliance with applicable data privacy laws and industry best practices. The goal is to ensure that data is retained only as long as necessary and disposed of securely when no longer required.

2. Scope

This policy applies to all consumer data processed by Nolan, including data retrieved via the Plaid API, as well as any associated metadata stored in backend systems.

3. Data Collection and Use

  • Consumer financial data is accessed exclusively through the Plaid API following explicit user consent.
  • Data is used solely for providing core application functionality.
  • Nolan adheres to the principle of data minimization, collecting only what is necessary.

4. Data Retention

  • Consumer data is retained only for as long as required to fulfill the purpose for which it was collected.
  • Data retention periods are reviewed periodically and adjusted based on operational and legal requirements.
  • Inactive or unused data is identified and subject to scheduled deletion.

5. User-Initiated Deletion

  • Users may request deletion of their data at any time by contacting mokbel.huss@gmail.com.
  • Upon request, all associated consumer data is permanently removed from active systems within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Account deletion triggers full removal of linked data.
  • You may also disconnect any linked account at any time from within the Nolan app. Upon disconnection, the associated Plaid access token is removed, preventing further data retrieval from that institution.
  • You may independently revoke Nolan's access to your financial institution data through Plaid's consumer portal at my.plaid.com.

6. Automated Data Lifecycle Management

  • Systems are designed to periodically review stored data and remove data that is no longer necessary.
  • Temporary and cached data are automatically cleared at defined intervals.

7. Data Disposal and Destruction

  • Data is permanently deleted using secure deletion methods to prevent recovery.
  • Logical deletion processes ensure removal from production systems, backups, and logs where applicable.
  • Any residual data is overwritten or securely purged in accordance with industry standards.

8. Security Controls

  • Data in transit is encrypted using TLS 1.2 or higher.
  • Access to stored data is restricted based on least-privilege principles.
  • Administrative access is limited to authorized personnel only.

9. Compliance

  • This policy is designed to align with applicable data protection regulations, including but not limited to Canadian privacy laws and general data protection principles.
  • Consumer data is handled responsibly and securely at all times.

10. Policy Review and Updates

  • This policy is reviewed periodically to ensure continued compliance with evolving regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Updates are made as necessary to reflect changes in application architecture or data handling practices.

Terms of Service

These terms are a binding agreement between you and Husein Mokbel, operating the Nolan app as a sole proprietorship ("Nolan," "we," "us"). By downloading, accessing, or using the app you agree to them, including the sections on no professional advice, disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnification, and governing law. If you do not agree, do not use the app. Last updated July 7, 2026.

1. What Nolan Is

  • Nolan is a personal finance information tool that organizes accounts you connect, explains your spending, and offers general educational guidance.
  • Nolan is not a bank, broker, money services business, or licensed financial, tax, investment, or legal advisor, and nothing in the app is professional advice or a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold any product or security.
  • Nolan is software only. It does not hold, move, invest, or take custody of your money and cannot execute transactions; it has read-only access to the accounts you connect through Plaid. Nolan is not insured by the CDIC, FDIC, or any deposit or investor protection scheme.
  • Content is generated in part by artificial intelligence and is for information and education only. Using Nolan does not create any advisory, fiduciary, or professional relationship. All financial decisions are your own, and you assume full responsibility and risk for any action you take. Do your own research and consider consulting a qualified, licensed professional before acting.
  • You must be at least 18 years old, or the age of majority where you live, to use Nolan.

2. Accounts and Accuracy

  • Insights depend on data you provide and data your bank returns through Plaid. Banks occasionally return incomplete or delayed data.
  • We work to keep classifications accurate but do not guarantee every figure is error-free. Verify important numbers against your bank statements.

3. Subscriptions and Billing

  • Nolan offers an optional auto-renewable subscription, Nolan Pro, and one-time message credit packs. After a limited number of free messages each week, continued use of the AI assistant requires a subscription or credits.
  • Subscriptions are billed through your Apple App Store account and renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
  • You can manage or cancel anytime in your App Store account settings. Any free trial converts to a paid subscription unless cancelled before it ends. Prices are shown in the app before purchase.
  • Fair use: all plans, including Nolan Pro and its free trial, are for normal personal use and are subject to reasonable daily limits that keep the service fast, sustainable, and secure. We may adjust these limits and may throttle or suspend automated, abusive, or excessive usage. Message credits are consumable, are used only for AI messages, and are non-refundable except where required by law.
  • Refunds are handled by Apple under Apple's standard policies; you can request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

4. Acceptable Use

  • Use Nolan only for your own personal finances.
  • Do not abuse, overload, reverse-engineer, scrape, or automate excessive requests against the service, and do not attempt to access other users' data. We may rate-limit or suspend accounts that abuse the service.

5. Third-Party Services

  • Bank connectivity is provided by Plaid and is subject to Plaid's End User Privacy Policy and terms.
  • AI responses are generated using Anthropic. Payments are handled by Apple. Your use of those features is also subject to their terms.

6. Disclaimers, Limitation of Liability, and Indemnification

  • To the maximum extent permitted by law, the app is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free, that bank data returned through Plaid will be accurate or complete, that information sourced from public web searches will be current or correct, or that any insight will lead to a particular financial outcome.
  • Responses are generated by artificial intelligence and can be inaccurate, out of date, or incomplete. They are educational information, not professional advice, and should not be relied on as a statement of fact. You are responsible for evaluating any output before relying on it, and for verifying important numbers against your official bank records.
  • To the maximum extent permitted by law, Nolan and its owner will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, savings, data, goodwill, or financial loss, arising from your use of or reliance on the app, even if advised of the possibility. Our total aggregate liability for all claims will not exceed the greater of (a) what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or (b) CAD $100. Where a jurisdiction does not allow these limits, our liability is limited to the smallest amount permitted by law.
  • You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Nolan and its owner from any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses, including reasonable legal fees, arising from your use of the app, your violation of these terms or any law, or your reliance on the app in making a financial decision.

7. Termination and Changes

  • You may stop using Nolan at any time, disconnect your bank, and delete your data from within the app.
  • We may suspend or terminate access for violations of these terms, and may update these terms from time to time, with the effective date noted above.

8. Governing Law and Disputes

  • These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable there, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
  • Before starting any formal claim, you agree to contact us at mokbel.huss@gmail.com and try in good faith to resolve the matter informally for at least thirty days. Any dispute that cannot be resolved this way is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located in Ontario, Canada, and you consent to that venue.
  • The sections that by their nature should survive termination, including disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnification, and governing law, continue to apply. If any provision is unenforceable, the rest remain in effect.
  • Nothing in these terms limits any consumer rights that cannot be waived under the laws of your place of residence.
